Why Social Media?

Why Social Media?

I get asked this question a lot when I tell people what I do for a living.  Considering my career didn't exist 10 years ago, how did my journey lead me to social media?

I worked in a fabulous corporate position for many years.  I worked alongside Corporate Marketing, Corporate Sales and Senior Management working on business strategy, sales planning and branding.  It was a fabulous company and I could never imagine working anywhere else.  Then fate stepped in and decided that another path was planned for me.

When my son was diagnosed with Autism, it was impossible for me to maintain my corporate career.  Without a schedule that would accommodate a regular job, I found myself living a lifelong dream.  No... not running from therapy appointment to therapy appointment for my son, I was finally going to realize my dream of becoming an entrepreneur.

So, why Social Media?

During my time researching Autism, I turned to Social Media to connect with others in the same position as me.  I saw how powerful social media was to build relationships, connect with others and discover resources that I didn't know existed.  I quickly found out how incredible these platforms were to build businesses.  Businesses were talking to me and building relationships. I was able to get to know the people behind the businesses to understand their philosophies, values, etc and how they fit with me as their potential client.

Then my light bulb went off.  When I combine my corporate experience with marketing, branding and sales with my new knowledge of the power of Social Media, a new business was formed.  I took many courses as I wanted to learn as much as I could about the various platforms.  Of course, that learning never ends.  How often does Facebook change their look and navigation?

My philosophy is about being real online and letting your true self shine through.  It is important to show a combination of your business and your personal sides.  I believe that people buy from people they know, like and trust.  People who build online relationships on a platform of trust, authenticity and integrity, really shine on social media.
