My Journey to Being An Entrepreneur…

Growing up I dreamed of becoming a Singer or an Actor… I worked in the Retail industry for 10 years, studied Creative Advertising in post secondary school and had a 12 years career as a Flight Attendant but never did the thought cross my mind that I should become an Event Planner!

Although that being said, my birthday party was always a big production growing up as the only child to immigrant parents. I was only 18 years old when I organized my first large event for a guest list of over 300 people….  From there I simply dabbled here in there with the coordinating of events, not realizing until now that event planning has always been part of my life, just not the focus of my life as it is currently.

It wasn’t until my career in aviation came to a screeching halt that I was faced with two decisions… 1. Stay in the aviation industry and apply for a job at another airline or 2. Give a career in event planning a try. After attempting to enter the airline industry once again and failing my “French” interview by one point I left the interview that day with a huge smile on my face and a brisk skip in my step because little did the interviewer know that they had just made my future career decision for me and I couldn’t have been more excited!

I proceeded to look into what it would take to become a professional Wedding Planner (since I always found weddings to be so magical growing up) and quickly found out that there was a company that would certify me in just one weekend. Funny enough, as I sat in my seat in a classroom at the U of T in Mississauga I found myself frequently saying… “Ah, I already do that” or “That’s exactly what I would do”….

After graduating from my Wedding Planner certification course I went into full swing and ordered business cards, created a Facebook page, had a professional website created and started spreading the news about my new job to as many people as possible….

I have to admit the first few years were not easy as I am sure is a cliché amongst entrepreneurs… Months would come and go and where the next job would come from was uncomfortably unknown. I put in endless hours in  volunteer work with other Wedding Planners so as to gain experience and volunteered at many events to gain name recognition… I am a firm believer that when people can see what you are capable of and how hard you work when you are working for free… then it gives them an idea of how much you will be willing to do when you are getting paid!  I worked every job as if I was a walking advertisement for my business. I wanted to be known for being hard working, reliable, creative, extremely organized, professional and the list goes on… I am happy to say that perseverance is definitely key in any profession. I worked hard in the last four years to build my company, awareness to my brand, to create a fantastic preferred vendor list that would accommodate any client that comes my way and I am happy to say that five years later I am graciously starting to reap the rewards from my hard work and the magic is finally starting to happen…

Failure Was Not An Option

As a mother of three and wife to my husband who has been the main provider in our household for the past four years I am determined more and more every day to get my business bringing in a pay cheque similar if not better that the ones I use to receive during the tale end of my career in aviation.

I have become accustomed to creating my own business hours, which allows me the freedom to be home with my family as needed and take vacations whenever I wish! Going back into the work force and working for someone else is no longer an option… I am very focused and determined more than ever to create a successful business so that I never have to go back to that world.

My Education Track

I completed my post secondary education in Toronto, Ontario and graduated from a Creative Advertising Program.

I completed Flight Attendant training and took an annual training course every year for 12 years.

I completed a Wedding Planner Certification Course as well as LGBT Wedding Coordinator Course.

I continue to learn everyday of my life through my family, children, friends and peers.

How I Empower Others Today…

I have often been told that my personality is inspiring and that when people meet me they can’t help but feel a positive, giving, caring and exciting energy stream out of me which in turns at times rubs off on them.

I believe that everyone has a story and no matter how tired I may be sometimes or if I feel defeated at times I always make sure that I maintain and return to caring out all of those amazing characteristics that others see in me…

From time to time I hear people say to me… “Wow…you're so busy, you are doing so well, how do you find time to do everything you do, I live vicariously through you…” My answer is always that due to my organizational skills I try to manage and make the most of my time as much as possible. Some would call me a workaholic and considering I never sit still for long, funny enough I do have a considerable amount of down time. I also am a firm believer of giving credit where credit is due and if it were not for the support I receive from my partner in life and my children I could not manage to get done as much as I do.

I started from ground zero when I started my business and will never forget where I came from so I also believe in helping and supporting other businesses that are starting out as much as I can…even if it’s simply posting a quick mention about them on Facebook.
